How I discovered my professional passion:

I was always good at math. One of the first college courses I took was on statistics. I found them to be full of beauty and interest and that was it. Statistics is like putting together a puzzle. I never know what is going to emerge when I get started.

Only at UCR’s GSOE do you find:

A wonderful and supportive environment offering ample opportunities to develop new programs.

Why being at UCR’s GSOE is a good place for me to carry out my professional commitment:

Any place is what you make of it. But if the infrastructure is there, it’s a lot easier to do that.

What reading do you keep on your nightstand?

Avoid Boring (other) People: Lessons from a Life in Science by James D. Watson

How my students have influenced – and inspired – me:

They challenge me to do the best possible job in the classroom.

One of the best questions a student asked me:

Every question is the best question. Since I can’t read minds, I use them as springboards. I don’t think any question is a bad question

Leisure activities:

I like soccer, and I collect records, vinyl. It has a warmth you can’t reproduce. Digital music is almost too perfect. I like 70s progressive, psychedelic, and heavy rock. I paint. I do oil paintings. I love painting churches.
