Project Snapshot
Minority Access to Research Careers, Undergraduate Science Training and Research (MARC-U*STAR) Research Group
Principal Investigator(s)/Project Directors: Dr. Reba Page
Project Description: The research project will describe and analyze federally-funded programs in undergraduate science that are designed to increase the number and competitiveness of underrepresented minorities who go on to graduate school and careers in research in the biomedical sciences. The project takes as its specific case MARC-U*STAR (Minority Access to Research Careers, Undergraduate Science Training and Research). It uses a multi-method, multidisciplinary research design focused on relationships among five domains: (1) the undergraduate science curriculum; (2) the structure and culture of science at research and comprehensive universities; (3) the acquisition and use of social capital in undergraduate science; (4) processes of identity formation among students and faculty; and (5) the recent history of the federal role in undergraduate science.
