Multiple Subject Credential

Shaping the future one teacher at a time.Teacher and student.

The multiple subjects credential is for candidates interested in teaching at the elementary level or through the 12th grade level in a self-contained classroom. UCR multiple subject students may choose from the following for this credential program:

Multiple Subjects Credential with Bilingual, Crosscultural, Language & Academic Development Emphasis (BCLAD) in Spanish. The BCLAD Emphasis in Spanish provides special training to help prospective teachers deliver instruction in the student’s primary language - Spanish. Students preparing for this emphasis must demonstrate proficiency in the Spanish language and have completed the undergraduate prerequisites. Please download the Prepare to Teach flier for the BCLAD emphasis in Spanish.

The following options are available for earning the Multiple Subjects credential (with or without the BCLAD emphasis):

Option 1: Blended Program of Undergraduate Teacher Preparation in Multiple Subjects. This program is for students who know as early as their freshman or sophomore year that they wish to be teachers. The program is a "fast track" to classroom teaching. Student teaching is begun in the last quarter (Spring quarter only) as an undergraduate and requires two additional quarters of post-baccalaureate attendance as a post-baccalaureate non-degree program (Option 2) or with the M.Ed. program (Option 3). Contact person: Susan Braddock by e-mail.

Option 2: Post-baccalaureate non-degree program. This program is ideal for individuals who have completed their bachelor’s degree and only want to complete the requirements for a credential. A graduate degree is not awarded.

Option 3: M.Ed. Program - An accelerated graduate program in which exceptional teacher candidates (GPA of 3.2 or above) earn both a teaching credential and a master’s degree in four quarters. (Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring). Prerequisite coursework is required.

Students must also choose the format (student teaching or intern teaching) that they wish to complete their credential program:

Student Teaching Format: This is the format that most candidates will choose since it is for those with little or no teaching experience. Students are placed in a public school setting by their UCR teaching supervisor and experience at least two different placements during the credential program. Students receive guidance from both their UCR teaching supervisor and a school site cooperating teacher and gradually assume full-time classroom responsibility over the course of the program.

Intern Teaching Format: This format is for students with significant experience (approximately 150 hrs.) as an instructional assistant, substitute, or emergency permit teacher. Intern candidates must meet the CCTC requirements for an intern credential: bachelor’s degree, Certificate of Clearance, passage of CBEST, passage of CSET exams in multiple subjects, and meet U.S. Constitution requirement. The following UCR education courses or the equivalent should be completed or in progress: EDUC110, 139, and 172. Candidates secure their own teaching position in a public school that has an internship agreement with UCR.
