Single Subject Credential

Shaping the future one teacher at a time.Teacher and student.

The School of Education offers the Single Subject Credential Program which authorizes the teaching of a subject area in a K-12 setting, but is usually limited to junior high or high school.

The following options are available for earning the Single Subject credential.

Option 1: Student teaching - The Professional Development School Program at the University of California, Riverside is coordinated through the Comprehensive Teacher Education Institute (CTEI) and is part of a national network of Professional Development Schools. Our program was selected as the national winner of the 1997 Distinguished Program in Teacher Education Award, was named an Exemplary Teacher Education Program by the National Education Association in 1994, and received the Quality of Education Award from the California Council on the Education of Teachers in 1991. Candidates student teach in a Professional Development School site and are assigned to a University Supervisor who in turn assigns them to a district cooperating teacher one of the approved Professional Development Schools. Students teach under the guidance of a district cooperating teacher, gradually assuming full-time teaching responsibility for a classroom.

Option 2: Internship. This option is for candidates who have had continuous teaching experience either as an instructional assistant, substitute, or emergency teacher in a public school or equivalent classroom setting. Interns assume full teaching responsibilities in a general education class and are paid salaries set by the employing district. Intern candidates are responsible for obtaining their own teaching position with a participating district.

Option 3 : Single Subject Mathematics Integrated Program. This program is for students who know as early as their freshman or sophomore year that they wish to be teachers. The programs is a "fast track" to classroom teaching.

Option 4 : M.Ed. Program - An accelerated program in which an exceptional teacher candidate earns both a teaching credential and a master’s degree in four quarters. (Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring). Prerequisite coursework is required (please visit the M.Ed page at left for the latest information).
